Chapter 5 – End of the Road: their Deaths

“We weren’t taking any chances.”

Ted Hinton & Bob Alcorn, Texas police officers

Bonnie and Clyde was able to outrun the authorities because he managed to exploit a legal loophole in interstate laws. Along with his strategy of changing cars and license plates frequently, he used the state line law. The Federal Bureau of Investigation or FBI during Bonnie and Clyde’s time was called the Bureau of Investigation. Although it was a significantly powerful organization, it was limited by interstate laws and they were not given jurisdiction over local crimes. The state line rule prevents one law enforcement agency to cross another law enforcement agency’s territory. Clyde used this convenient loophole to run around the Midwestern states and be protected from the pursuit.

However, it is this same rule that ultimately caused Bonnie and Clyde’s downfall. Frank, the Texan enforcer tasked to capture the couple, found a pattern in Bonnie and Clyde’s movements. To effectively use the state line rule, Clyde chose to circle around the edges or the borders of the Midwestern states, this way he can cross borders quickly when needed. The key to unlocking the pattern was Bonnie and Clyde’s regular visits to their families. Frank predicted that the Barrow Gang’s next stop will be in Louisiana. He was right.

On May 23, 1934 after almost 3 days concealed in a patch of bushes and waiting for the Barrow Gang’s arrival, Frank and his team almost gave up. At 915am, they heard the familiar sound of a speeding Ford V-8. They fired 130 rounds, using all guns and rifles in their car. So loud and so long was the firing that Frank and his team experienced temporary deafness.

The 6 member team each with one shotgun, one rifle and one pistol had a total of 18 guns with them. They emptied their rifles first and then used the shotguns. There was such a thick smoke from the guns that their car looked like it was on fire. When the shotguns were emptied and the smoke cleared, they saw the Ford V-8 running past them and ran into a ditch. They took out their pistols and shot their guns towards the car.

Bonnie was 24 and Clyde was 25.

At the end of their 2 year career, they were suspected for committing several crimes including:
